I just finished reading Wives and Sisters by Natalie R. Collins. I previously blogged about how I got interested in the story.
It's a dark story. I guess I should have known that from the first chapter. And something I had read made me think (spoiler alert) they would eventually find Cindy. The friend that was "missing".
The title is a bit misleading too, I think. I expected it to be about relationships between wives and sisters. It wasn't. It was more about how women, in general, are treated in the Mormon church. It was a scary look into it. I kept thinking about the Osmonds. They were a big thing when I was growing up and I was a big fan. I was crushed when Donny got married. Well, not really but I remember it being a shock because it seemed like a sudden thing.
Anyway, this story made me wonder about their family. If they lived the way Mormons were portrayed in this story. I would hope not but the whole thing was pretty creepy.
Now, having said all that, I liked the book. It just was a bit more intense than I guess I expected but then again, I should have known it from the first chapter. Heck, from the first sentence of the first chapter. I was six years old the first time I had an inkling God would not always protect me. That was the first line of the book. Yep, definitely should have given me a clue that it might be a bit intense.

The next book on my list to read is Shana Galen's When Dashing met Danger. I have to read it completely this weekend because it's up for discussion starting Monday. I've had it since June (before Reno anyway) I believe but I still haven't read it. I had read her chick-lit story The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Men I've Dated. That wasn't a bad story but it was based on a theme of Star Wars and I'm not a fan of Star Wars. When she related men to Wookies and Jedis, I didn't know who was supposed to be the good guy. As a result, I had a harder time reading the story. I think that contributed to my putting this book further down in the TBR pile.
Shana (aka Shane Bolks ) is a local author. Last year we were both members of a local RWA Chapter and I met her. Actually I first met her when she spoke at, what I consider, my home base chapter. I was very impressed with her then and I learned a lot from her workshop.
Anyway, that's what I'm reading. What are you reading?

Hey Lucy, good to see you about. I've missed you this last week. :) Currently, I'm reading Katie MacAlister's Corset Diaries- which is hilarious and Shana Abe's The Smoke Thief.
The Corset Diaries is about a woman who is talked into doing a reality show in England where she has to live the life of a Duchess for a month. She takes the job because the money is good. When she gets to England, she meets Max- the gorgeous man playing the Duke and a full cast of crazy characters who are their servants. Katie really likes to embarrass her heroines so Tessa (the heroine) gets into all sorts of embarrassing, but funny situations.
The Smoke Thief is about a race of people who can shape shift from dragon to human form and live in the late 1700s England. It's a very interesting time period to throw shape shifting dragons into. So far, it's very good.
What's next? Shhh... don't tell anyone but I counted how many books I had in my tbr pile yesterday because it seemed like there was a lot. There was. A whole lot- 86 to be specific. Should I admit to that? My roommate says I'm cut off. No more books for me. To which I reply, "So when are we going to the bookstore again?" LOL
How come my comment didn't show up as a comment? *sigh*
It came across Aura. And good to see you too. The Corset Diaries sounds good. Now I want to read it. LOL
My TBR pile isn't quite as tall as yours but I'm sure it's closer than I would like to believe. But, I've been dieting and a friend of mine told me that if I stayed on my diet until next Friday, I could buy a new book, as a treat. I'm thinking The Corset Diaries is going to be that treat. Guess I should ignore the overwhelming desire I have for a Wendy's burger and a frosty, huh? ;)
LOL, if you want a new book, you probably should ignore those cravings. :) The Corset Diaries is a great book so far, and since it's a Katie MacAlister book, I know I won't be disappointed. If you have the chance, look the book up! :) And good luck on that diet!
I did look it up. I really, really want it now! But I went off the wagon...do I have to tell my friend? lol
LOL, I won't tell if you won't! ;)
Wow, I like the new look, Lucy. Nice!
Thanks guys. The change is a result of my wanting links and things on the page and I couldn't figure out how to do it on other pages. Maria had the same template I did and she somehow managed but I couldn't do it...it kept munkin' up the page. Kait tried too but she had problems as well. So I had to change or give up having what I wanted. (sigh)
And I've got to start reading When Dashing Met Danger...we start discussing tomorrow!
Currently the book that has the bookmark being used... (okay, some books have bookmarks but they aren't being read-- how's that for confusing?) is A Sesaon in the Highlands. An anthology with 5 writers in it. So far, so good. I picked it up at the ECWC and it's been in the luggage, the box, the desk tbr stacks. I won't count the books waiting to be read. Nor the books I've started, lost the urge to finish and put into the will get back to it pile some year so...
Fickle reader. I read to fit my moods. Next up will no doubt be a fantasy. I'm feeling a Terry Brooks moment brewing.
Love the new look, Lucy. Sorry I couldn't figure out the hold. :(
