The weekend

Numbers and I go way back. Back in junior high (we called it intermediate school here), I was in all the accelerated math classes. Same in high school. That is, until I got in to Trig in my junior. That's when numbers and I parted company. Sure, we run into each other from time to time but it's not the same. We just don't understand each other anymore.

Which causes a problem when I have to use numbers to count points when doing the Weight Watcher's (WW) program. For example, a few months back I discovered Stouffer's Cheddar Potato Bake. Have you had these before? I love them. I haven't followed WW for a while now but calculated them to be 6 points. Not bad, in the big scheme of things.

Well, I decided to go back to following WW and counting points last week and I picked up a couple of the CPB dinners. But, not 100% certain of the point value, I calculated it up Saturday when I was going to have one. Yep, 6 points. Then, when I decided to fix it up, I was pulling it out of the box and noticed something I'd never seen before. "Serves 2" Huh? What do they mean serves 2? That's when I checked the back and saw that it was 6 points per serving and that it had 2 servings in the box. So not good. When you get 21 points in a day, you don't want 12 of them going to a small portion of potatoes that someone thought was enough for two people.

This was followed yesterday by discovering that my 6 point peanut butter toast was actually 9 points! I also discovered that a serving of bread was one slice, so forget any sandwiches. And yet, for some reason, I'm not losing any weight. Go figure.

But, in other news, I got my hair cut Friday. Here's the deal...I got my hair cut New Year's Eve last year. I went in and told the person (this was a different salon - across town) I wanted my hair cut. I wanted a long layer at the bottom of my hair and I wanted to get bangs cut (I haven't worn bangs in a couple of years). She went wacking away at my hair and I came out with something totally different than what I'd asked for but it was actually very cute. I liked it a lot. I got more compliments on this haircut than any other I can ever remember. So, I was a little nervous when, six weeks later, I went to my usual spot and got my hair cut. The lady asked if I wanted the same hair cut and I said yes and away she went. She actually did a good job - I still liked it.

Then, another six weeks go by and I go to get my hair cut again. I got someone else, who looked vaguely familiar to me. I told her I wanted the exact same hair cut and she said okay and started wacking away on my hair. I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention until I realized she was using some sort of razor on my hair. And then I remember where I know her from...she's the crazy razor lady I blogged about here. I freaked out and our conversation went something like this:

Me: What are you doing?

Her: It's a razor.

Me: (the light going on as to where I know her from) Why are you using it on my hair?

Her: I only did one side.

She says this like it's not a big deal because she's only done one side - not like I should let her do the other side so they match. And if the the truth is known, I didn't let her do the other side. Sad thing is, the overall cut was so bad, I don't think anyone noticed the portion that had been razored.

Me: Did I ask you to use a razor on my hair?

Her: No.

Me: Then why did you?

Her: I only did one side.

Me: I asked you to give me the exact same hair cut I had! Why would you use a razor on my hair???

Her: I only did one side.

Me: Don't do anything else to my hair!

Her: Okay.

Me: I still need my eyebrows waxed.

Yes, she really did my eyebrows after that, so I deserved what I got there.

Anyway, I went Friday to get my hair cut/fixed at the same place. I got the person who had cut it the second time and had done a good job. She asked if I wanted the same cut and I said "not exactly. It got butchered the last time I got it cut so I need it fixed now." She said okay and as she cut, she pointed out where the last person had munked it up, as if it mattered at that point.

She cut things that shouldn't have been cut and after several days of playing with it, I realized why the cut looks familiar. Here is what my hair looks like.....

I only wish I was kidding!
How was your weekend?

Heroes, Heroines and other Writerly Stuff

In 2006 a friend of mine was having a contest for a $250 gift card to the bookstore of your choice. Being the book whore that I am, I wanted that gift card. Bad.

How it worked was your name got thrown in the pool if you read 10 books. For every five books beyond that, your name got thrown in again for another chance to win. The contest started on June 1, 2006 and ran through the end of the year. So, from June 1 to December 31 of 2006 I read something like 85 books. (I didn't win the contest, in case you were wondering. *sigh*)

In 2007 I read 70 some-odd books for the entire year.

This year, what with school and all, I haven't had as much time to read. So, with required text books included, I've only read like 30 books this entire year. Which is so depressing. But, I have two weeks off and I'm trying to make up for lost time here, which I don't want to spend on crappy books.

So, what makes a crappy book? Well, it can differ from book to book for me but I started one the other day that goes in the "I rarely ever do this but I'm pitching this book without finishing it" pile. Why? Because there's nothing in it that I can grasp on to to believe. The hero is a country boy (he's done the city life before and didn't care for it so it's not like he doesn't know what he's missing out on - he does and he's not interested in it). The heroine is a city girl, visiting the country on her way to fame and fortune. They meet and are immediately in love with each other - just like that. There's no buildup, no nothing. They just know they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Not that they've said as much to each other. No. As far as that goes, they're standoffish. The hero has something the heroine needs but he's not willing to let her have/use it and politely tells her no. She tells him, in no uncertain terms, that she WILL have it and she's not letting up until he gives it over to her. That's where I have the biggest problem. I want to see the build up of the relationship. I want to see the chemistry take over. I want to fall in love with them. But, when one says no (politely or otherwise) and the other takes steps to manipulate what they want out of the other, that's when I'm done. If they don't respect each other - and show it - I can't get behind the pairing. Not to mention, I don't see how this story can resolve itself without one giving up their dream. How is that a happy ending? This story is part of a series (that I've read a couple of the others of) and everyone ends up in this small country town. Which means the heroine has to give up her dream of fame and fortune. Sure, she might be happy for the here and now but what about in 10 years when he's burping and farting and scratching his balls all the time? Will she still be glad she made the decision she did? Which is another thing, I have to believe that 10, 20 years down the line the couple will be happy. And I just don't see it in this story. So, after only 50 some-odd pages of reading, I'm officially done with that book, for now.

Okay, enough about that - on to the other writerly stuff.

A couple of weeks ago the romance community was having an auction on ebay to help out an author who had lost her husband and had catastrophic medical bills to contend with. So, I went to check out the items and saw this and totally had an image in my head how I could use it in my writing. You see, I've been clipping pictures of people and saving them in an envelope. But I want to use this for the visual. I can post the pictures on the board (the flowers in the corner are magnets) and then put their pictures in the album, telling their story. It arrived yesterday and I can't wait to get it all together and start telling the story.

And hopefully I'll avoid the pitfalls I can't stand in other writer's stories.

I've just shared one of my pet peeves in books. What makes you want to fling a book you're reading across the room? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

White Elephants

Today my group at work had their holiday party. The meats were paid for by the department but everything else was of the potluck variety. I kept a list in my office where people could - but weren't obligated to - sign up so they could see what was needed or be sure they got in what they wanted to get in. We had a pretty good spread.

(That's my boss in the background.)

After we ate we played the White Elephant Game. You know the one. If you want to play, you have to bring a gift. All the gifts are placed on a tableand those bringing gifts draw a number. The person with number 1 goes to the table and picks a gift to unwrap.

We had some interesting "wrapping" - that envelope WAS the "wrapping paper".

Anyway, when number 1 is done, number 2 can either "steal" the present from number 1 or take another gift from the table. If the gift is stolen, then the person whose gift was can either steal someone else's gift (if it's further down the line - if only two have gone there wouldn't be another gift to steal, and you can't steal back your gift). Each gift can be stolen twice before it's "frozen" and it stays with an owner.

What we did to make sure we knew when a gift was frozen was they had to put on a hat - or other item available (hats in the picture above). Someone mentioned that people wouldn't want to wear the hats so I stipulated that if they didn't wear the hat, their present became unfrozen again and could be stolen. Yeah, I know I'm bad but it was totally worth it! lol

The first person to have their gift "frozen" was given a boa to wear.

Doesn't he look thrilled? lol I think it's a good look for him.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago Christy Craig was having a contest over on her Killer Fiction blog and I said if I won (it was a pooping Santa), I'd put it in a Victoria's Secret bag and put it in the white elephant game at work. And I won. Well, I didn't win-win but she gave me one anyway - I think to see if I would do it and take pictures - and I did. :)

I have to confess that I thought about using something else because I really thought the pooping Santa was cute but I couldn't find the "replacement" gift I was going to use - my step-father's CD with the title song of "I don't look good naked anymore". I mean, really, how funny would that be in a Victoria's Secret bag? But, since I couldn't find it to save my life, I went with Plan A and used the pooping Santa.

Well, it wasn't any time before it got stolen - bag and all.

And a few minutes later, it was forever frozen (and since I was the last number in line, it was before I could steal it :( ).

So, I didn't realize how many "stealers" we'd have in our group and didn't know how many "frozen" hats I'd need. Well, I'd brought three headband hats and the boa. I borrowed six sombreros. I figured that would be enough. Well I was wrong. So, when we ran out of those, I had to get creative. Below are the "alternate" "hats" (yes, I thought the words should be quoted separately ;) ).

(By the way, he was the only one that didn't return his "hat" at the end of the game. No, seriously. lol)

And one last one with all the "hat people".A good time was had by all. :)

Holiday Weekend

I'm so glad we have a long weekend this weekend. I brought home work because I have a 9:00 a.m. meeting on Tuesday and some things are going to be asked of me and I won't be able to give a thorough answer unless I do the work. But you know what, I don't care. I mean, who the heck schedules a meeting first thing in the morning on the first day back after a holiday? I'll be able to give a reasonably intelligent answer if I don't do the work, I just won't be able to answer ALL the questions that might come up. I've been working my tail off at work lately and I deserve the time off, so I'm taking it! I'm not working this weekend!!!

And I'm going to read as many books as time allows, starting with finishing Kasey Michael's latest, Dial M for Mischief.

I've also been playing a bit on the online dating sites I previously mentioned. eHarmony is having a free communication weekend. I had already been pretty well talked into officially joining, because someone pointed out to me that most men wouldn't pay for a membership if they weren't serious about it. There may a few scam artists out there who have paid, but not a lot. So, then eHarmony opens things up for four days. I was kind of reviewing the "matches" they've made and decided to be pretty open minded about it.

I received questions today from a man who is 51 (5 years older than me) and retired. His profile says something to the effect that he's thankful that money is not a problem for him. Then we go through the "guided communication" far enough to where he can send/ask more than the eHarmony system controls (initially you can only ask/tell things from a list provided by eHarmony). He mentions that he won't have his membership past Monday and gives me his email and home numbers - twice.

I looked back at his profile and notice that our "match" was made last night. I'm thinking that he only joined for the free communication weekend and may not be part of the "serious - I paid" crowd. I sent him an email (though the eHarmony system, and therefore somewhat anonymous) asking him when he joined or if he was just in for the free communication.

I'm thinking he's a "no".

What about you? Anyone have any big plans for the weekend?

Last call

Today is officially my last day of vacation. I'm not ready to go back to work tomorrow. I didn't get much of what I wanted to get done, done. Plus, I just don't want to be working now. I was telling someone at work that I wanted to be a stay-at-home wife, only I didn't want to have to be married to do it. And that's really how I feel about it. I want going to an office and working to be an option. But, since that's not the case, I'll go back tomorrow. *sigh*

I did my taxes today and have already received confirmation that the return as submitted has been accepted. I just have to send in a signature page (I didn't have the information from last year's tax returns because of the computer crash last summer and my not printing out the return) to complete it. Just got to buy a stamp and put it in the mail. :-)

I have a draft of my midterm complete. I heard back from my instructor and she was pretty broad and vague in her response so I'm still not certain if I'm going to be giving her what she's looking for. I tend to think that it would be good enough if we were doing this in class but given that we have two weeks to work on it I would think the bar would (and should) be raised and I'm not certain I've risen to the challenge. I still have a few more days to refine it though, and then - once it's turned in - I plan to discuss the exam, and my answers, with a good friend.

My term paper is pretty well written - in my head, that is, it still lacks the "on paper" thing that most instructors prefer. I'm still doing research though. If I didn't mention it here, I'm writing on abortion. I sent out a small little questionnaire for an optional analysis portion of the paper and got a great response to it. Several people have thrown out some interesting tidbits on the topic and that has helped with the required research aspect of the paper. One person though, sent me some information and I thought it was great information but I can't find anything to support her claim. I emailed her and she can't find it either so I can't really use it but it would have been great to include. Basically I chose this topic because I have a strong opinion about it and thought the paper would be easier for me to write for that reason but it turns out it's been a learning experience for me - due in no small part to the input from others - which, when you think about it, was the whole purpose for this exercise.

Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Easter. :-)

Nearing the end

Yesterday was another blown day. I had pretty well made up my mind that I'd do everything this weekend. I finally heard back from my instructor last night and, as with everything else, her response was pretty broad and vague but I do know what sort of page space she's looking for for each response.

Anyway, I was feeling tired pretty early and decided to listen to my body and went to bed. I'd been asleep for less than an hour and woke up with a start and a realization that my term paper is due more quickly than I'd been thinking. I've still been looking at it as weeks out that it's due but it's actually due the week after next. Gulp! I tried to go back to sleep so that I'd wake up today rested and refreshed but that wasn't working for me so I got up and started reading my research materials for the paper. I was tired enough that it wasn't really sinking in but I still couldn't sleep. So I settled on having a major anxiety attack and a fitful night of sleep, including a dream where I went to a comedy club (but didn't laugh) and had my purse stolen, which was hard to shake off when I woke up for some reason.

So the plan for today is to finish up my midterm and then give serious consideration to the term paper - all while doing laundry. Tomorrow will be spent on finishing up rough drafts and reading Acts 4 and 5 of King Lear. Any extra time will be spent on the spring cleaning which was the whole purpose of me taking the last week off.

What are your plans for the holiday weekend?

Spring Break

This next week is our spring break here. And since I'm taking classes this semester, I wanted to take the week off.

And I have big plans. Ambitious plans. I plan to organize my house (and my life) - and for those of you who have been reading my blog, you know that's no small order.

On the agenda is to clean and organize my office and guest room, specifically, and the rest of my house, more generally. I thought about what Jennifer Cruisie did a few months back where she posted pictures of her room and wondered if I should do it. Posting before and after pictures, like for her, would make (read shame) me into doing it.

Anyway, a little backstory - last fall I won a desk and bookcase in an online, company-sponsored, auction. I cleaned out the room I planned to use as an office so that the furniture (which was way bigger than I'd anticipated) would go right in it - and so the friend who helped me move it would only see a clean room. Well, since we had to bring the furniture in through the garage, it was the garage that my friend commented on. She wasn't ugly about it or anything but just mentioned that I might want to clean out my garage. I didn't take offense, since she was right. So, a few weeks later when I was so irritated at my boss at work, I took a day off and really got to work on my garage. By the end of the day it was all nice and clean, and I was proud of the accomplishment. It felt good.

It wasn't until the next time I went into the office (I don't do that much because I don't have a phone line in there yet) and couldn't get to the desk or my carousel of books that I realized why the job of cleaning the garage had gone so well. Turns out, I'd just moved everything into my office. And it was a few weeks after that that I did the ransacking of my office and guest room looking for the paper I'd written on my veteran friend so that now neither my office or guest room are "pedestrian friendly". Yeah, that's a good way to put it. LOL

Anyway, the plan for the week is to get them organized and ready for actual use, as opposed to being "junk" rooms. Also during the week, I need to work on my term paper for government (I'm doing my paper on the non-controversial topic of abortion), my Shakespeare mid-term and questions for my Shakespeare portfolio, due at the end of the semester.

I won't mention that I also would like to rip down the paneling in the living room and prep and paint every wall in (and outside of) my house because I don't want anyone thinking I'm wanting to accomplish too much. But then again, I did start off by mentioning that the plan was a bit ambitious, didn't I?

So, what you do have planned for the upcoming week?

P.S. Here are pictures of the office from two different angles.

I know I saw it...somewhere

Earlier this year I bought a Weight Watchers comfort food recipe book. It has some great (low point) recipes in it and I fully intended to make a list of ingredients I needed and purchase them at the grocery store and make all these wonderful new foods.

That's what I intended. What happened is I brought the book home and promptly lost it. I've been searching for it for several months now. I thought it was in my "office" room and have been digging through boxes in there (don't ask) for some time now, without success. It was getting to the point that I was considering the possibility that someone broke into my house for the sole purpose of stealing the recipe book. Not likely I know but what else could've happened?

Then fast forward to today. It's Veteran's Day and we had a little celebration at work for the veterans who work there, along with a couple of special guests, including a WWII veteran. It was really nice. Well, eleven years ago I was in an English class and had to write a paper on a veteran. A co-worker had referred me to a friend of hers and we were going to meet for ten minutes or so so that I could interview him for my paper. Well, ten minutes turned into about four hours (during business hours - oops). I remember him getting emotional and my taking notes. And I remember the final product but not writing it (although I do recall looking at my notes and thinking I needed to include something I'd written down). I was very proud of the final product and to this day it's the one thing I've written that I'm most proud of.

Anyway, since it was Veterans Day (and I had planned on meeting this person at the celebration but due to a mix-up we're having lunch together instead) I wanted to find the paper (yes, I still have it...somewhere). So this evening I went digging for it. Without success (although I found a draft copy of pages 1, 2 and 3).

However, following is a list of a few things I DID find:

1. A pair of smiley face underwear (who they belong(ed) to is anyone's guess).
2. Several paintings I did a number of years ago.
3. Some leftover author promotional items that I thought I had returned (oops).
4. A ton of books (I'm starting to think I might have a problem).
5. The 2006 Golden Heart entries I judged.
6. A book all about Leonardo DiCaprio (don't ask).
7. A letter I wrote to my ex-husband five days before we separated (I read it and I cannot believe I said the things I did in it - and I only remember the date we separated because it was my mother's birthday).
8. Notes, papers and tests from a bunch of my college classes.
9. A belt to a dress I can't quite fit into yet, but is my goal.
10. An erotic story I wrote a number of years ago.
11. A picture I had forgotten I had but never got framed. (I really need to because I really, really like it)
12. Performance evaluations from 1986.
13. Several letters of recommendation, including one from a company that shortly after they gave me the LOR, I left during lunch and never returned.
14. About ten copies of a resume and letter of recommendation on someone I worked with nine years ago.

and.....

15. The cookbook. Wanna know where I found it? On my nightstand!!!!! Yeah, because THAT's where all cookbooks should be kept. (Really makes me wonder where the heck this paper can be now...)

Anyway, if you enjoy your freedom, thank a vet. :-)
