Premiere Week

I remember a time when the summer only offered re-runs. I think it was the early 90s and the original 90210 that first offered first run shows during the summer. And now that I think about it, that may be what started the decline of the "Summer Blockbuster Movies". People didn't have to go out to see something fresh.

Anyway, I like having options during the summer but it's always been a little weird to think of a "season" of shows to be 8 to 12 episodes. Way back when shows offered 39 new episodes every season. I think it's at 26 now. I wish I could work somewhere, only work 26 weeks a year and make the salaries they do, but I digress.

But that all said, I'm glad that my regular shows are starting back up again. And last night was the kick off.

Let's start with Dancing with the Stars. I really didn't want to watch it this season. It's on two nights a week and that's more than I really wanted to devote to one show this season (although I guess it makes it good that it's only on 10 to 12 weeks, right?).

From the moment they announced the celebrities I started a campaign to vote off Bristol Palin. Seriously, what makes her a celebrity? She's the daughter of a vice presidential candidate who is also a teenage mother who promotes teen abstinence. Maybe it stands up in Hollywood but if it were made into a movie, I wouldn't watch it.

Anyway, I decided she'd be my first vote off, and that was my downfall. Because I felt so strongly about it, I had to watch the first episode. And now I'm hooked. *sigh* As for Bristol, she wasn't as bad as I thought she'd be but I didn't think she was nearly as good as the judges thought she'd be. Before the show started I really wanted to root for Margaret Cho but goodness she was bad. I believe that her "wardrobe malfunction" was deliberate but I totally would've said it was a glitch because, it was bad. Really bad. Bad enough that I think I would be okay if she went home tonight. I'd rather it be Bristol or the Situation (seriously dude, no one cares that you only had five days to practice - that was your choice and no one cares!). In fact, I think they should have a double elimination tonight and get rid of both of them. Yeah, that would definitely work for me.

And then there was Castle. I love that show! I didn't realize how much I'd missed it until I watched it last night. In fact, if they wanted to do away with DWTS all together and have Castle on for three hours on Monday nights, I'd be good with that.

On my DVR I have the season premiere's of How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men. I haven't watched them yet but I know they're there, waiting for me.

Later this week there's Private Practice, Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters to look forward to. I have my DVR set to record the premiere of Cougar Town, even though it's not on my list of shows to watch . . . I want to see the reunion of Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox so I'm only recording/watching the one episode.

At the moment that's all I can think of on my "must watch" list for the new fall season. How about you? What's on your list?

Favorite Moments

I never once watched Everybody Loves Raymond when it was on prime time television but I've seen it in its syndicated life. I doubt I've seen all the episodes but it's a funny show. Some of my favorite episodes include the one where Debra and Ray leave their luggage on the stair landing, or the episode where they remember how they met. But one episode that makes me laugh until tears are streaming down my face - every time I watch it - is the one where Robert deliberately munks up his wedding invitation because Ray and Frank convince him Amy really wants to do the invitations and he's taking that away from her if he does them himself.

Are you an Everybody Loves Raymond fan? Do you have a favorite? Share please! :o)

And now, a clip from the wedding invitation episode. Enjoy! :o)

The one with no specific topic

I love spring time. It's my favorite time of the year. Unfortunately though, between school and work, I've had no time to enjoy it yet this year. And it's not looking good for me to have any face time with it in the near future either. Seriously, even my long hot baths (my one indulgence - once a week) aren't unmolested as I've been taking class reading material in with me - instead of my gossip magazines or pleasure reading materials. And it's getting to me. But I've been wanting to blog about a number of things (it's amazing how active the imagination is when you really don't have time for it) but I just haven't had time. But I'm going to make time today anyway...regardless of the consequences.

So, has anyone seen the show "What Would You Do?"? It's on ABC and what they do is they set up situations and document how people react to them. I've watched the show a couple of times and they've really done some interesting pieces. But, the one I'm going to blog about today has to do with something near and dear to my heart...online dating. :o)

Here's the set up...they had a man and a woman set up dates with people they'd met online. The woman was drop dead gorgeous, about 5'5" tall with a good body. The man was also drop dead gorgeous and about 5'11", with a good body.

Those people really existed and were a part of the set up. But when the people came to meet their dates, the woman they met was 6'1". She wasn't unattractive but she was definitely not who the guys were expecting. The man, on the other hand was only 5'3" - and balding.

So, here's how it played out...It was really enlightening.

They had the faux date waiting when the women showed up first. The first woman was very pleasant to him. He said that he'd fudged his height and she said it didn't matter. He asked if she'd go out with him again and she said yes. Then, when the producers told her what was going on, she said she wouldn't go out with him again and had lied to be polite so's not to hurt his feelings.

The second girl came out and was also polite to him but they had the real guy come and sit next to her. She did a double take and then continued to talk to the faux date. Faux date got up for a minute and she turned to the real date and gave him her name and number. When the producers interviewed her afterwards, she also didn't want to hurt his feelings but wasn't going to pass up an opportunity with the real date.

The last girl was very upset and got up and left. The producers brought her back to discuss with her and she was still upset at the situation - if she said why, I can't remember.

Then they did the guys, which was very interesting.

Guy number one had his face pixeled out as he was bleeped out, yelling at everyone. The producers were going after him and he went so far as shoving the cameraman, as he continued to be bleeped.

Guy number two also had his face pixeled out, even though he never came into the bar. Instead, they showed him looking through the window and then call his date - who was in the back, receiving the call. Faux date pretended to be on the phone so he knew she was who he was meeting. He asked if she was in the bar and she said yes. He left and sent a text that said "Family emergency came up. Won't be able to make it. Sorry." Classy, don't you think?

Anyway, on to guy number three. Him and faux date really seemed to hit it off. To the point that when they brought in the real date, he did a double take but was content to continue his conversation with the faux date. Then, when the producers told him what was going on and why did he continue to talk to his faux date, he said because they really seemed to have a lot in common. After the producers were done with him, him and faux date continued to talk. Now, that's the kind of guy I want to meet! But I digress.

There was one more date, which was actually kind of funny. Like date number three, he talked with the faux date and they got on fine. Faux date excused herself for a minute and the bartender (who was in on it) started talking to him about his online date. The guy was saying that the picture he'd seen online was "smoking" and that that wasn't who he'd met but that, that's what you had to expect with online dating. Not too shabby. But here comes the funny part...The real date came up and introduced herself. He seemed a little shocked but started talking to her. Then they sent faux date back in. She played it well, like she'd been busted. Grabbed her stuff and darted quickly out of the bar. When the producers told him what was going on, he was cool with it and they ended up sending him out - sans cameras - with his real date.

So, what I got from all of this is that men really are visual creatures - at least for the most part. I mean, I already knew it but this really brought it home - particularly with the online dating thing. But anyway...

In other news, have you heard about the new reality show that's coming on on TVLand? It's called Cougar and is about older women wanting to date younger men. It was created by the same people who put on The Bachelor and, from my understanding, is formatted the same way. I'm having some computer issues so I'm not sure what all can be seen but you can find out more about the show here (http://www.tvland.com/prime/shows/cougar/season1/). :) (okay, can't do link embedding either...darned computer!!!) Should be interesting. :o)

Well, I think there was more I was going to share but whatever it was has left me.

So, what's new with you guys?

Sucked in

A friend of mine is a huge fan of The Bachelor series. I'd never really watched it but the little bits I'd seen, well, I just didn't get it. Really didn't get it. But I know lots of people have to get it because it's been around for a while. Anyway, right now I couldn't tell you to save my life what made me decide to watch The Bachelorette this season - but I did. And I'm hooked. I want to know who DeAnna picks and if it's a love match or just a potential love match. I've been amazed at the choices she's made. Not because I thought they were good choices but because I didn't get them. I don't get the appeal of Graham. Never have. A person's personality can make them more or less attractive to me and Graham seemed lacking in that area - to me - so he was never this sexy thing that everyone seems see. I've been stunned at how long he's lasted. Now, I will say that on the home town dates he showed a different side of himself - something we haven't seen on air before. THAT Graham was fun and sexy. Until they sat on the bench to talk, when his appeal bottomed out again. I'm telling you, if Graham hadn't been the one to go Monday I would have lost all enthusiasm I've been getting for the show.

On the other hand, I'm just a little bit in love with Jesse now. He doesn't have classic good looks by any means but he's a good guy. He's the kind of guy you can have fun with, who would respect you, and who would take care of you. Major sexy in my book. And when they walked into his house and he explained that thing on the wall about the foundation for kids, it really touched me. It brought a smile to my heart and a tear to my eye. That's when I fell in love with him. Plus, I LOVED his parents. Seriously, they were great. His dad came out in a cap that had long hair attached to it, as a joke. Just shows they have great senses of humor and lots of personality. You see where Jesse gets it from. I didn't really get the labeling in his kitchen and I have to be honest, from what I've been hearing about it and others' reaction to it, I'm thinking it could be something that, over time, could result in justifiable homicide. But at the time I wasn't thinking like that. And since he's so respectful of the people in his life, he might be willing to give that up...especially if it could save his life. ;) I think Jesse has a good shot at being DeAnna's top choice.

Jason is another contender for DeAnna's heart. For me, though, he lost me early on. On the very first night I fell a little in love with him but once he had some alone time with DeAnna and he didn't tell her about his son, he lost me. My friend, the one who got me hooked, keeps telling me that they never know when they're going to be interrupted so she can forgive him for that. Okay, I can see that. BUT, when he got the one-on-one date he wasn't as open as I thought he should be. It was like her opinion of it mattered to him. As if, if she had a problem with it he would get rid of his son. Seriously, that's how it came across to me. I fell instantly OUT of love with him at that point. He won points back when he was there for her after she'd let Robert and Fred both go, but not enough for him to be the sexy, appealing man he'd once been to me. My friend fell in love with him on the home town visit and thinks DeAnna should choose him. She also doesn't think DeAnna would have brought him this far along if she wasn't going to pick him - because of his son. He's a bit of a dud to me.

Then there's Jeremy. I don't really know what to think of him. He's just kind of there for me. Not appealing. Not sexy. But not, NOT either of those things either. But listening to her the other night she kept saying, "he's just perfect. he has the perfect job, the perfect house, the perfect (whatever)". And all I could think was, nothing's perfect. My advice to DeAnna is, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. There were just things on the home town date that just gave me the creeps about Jeremy. There are some that think Jeremy will go the distance but for the life of me, I can't see why.

Oh, but the point of the blog was, my friend was telling her boyfriend how funny it was that I'd never watched the show and now I can't wait until Monday nights to see what DeAnna does with the men. I mean, I really still don't get the appeal of the show but I'll be there Monday night, watching with the rest of America.

P.S. I was going to tell you how my friend has also got me watching So You Think You Can Dance (another show I don't get the appeal of) but this blog post ran longer than I meant for it to so maybe another time..... ;)

Not ready for prime time

Do you remember that television show, Magnum P.I. (with Tom Selleck)? It was on during the '80s...when I was married (kinda dating myself there but, oh well).

Well, my then-husband and I never watched it when it was on. And then it went into syndication, while it was still on the air in prime time. You know, like most successful shows do. Anyway, my ex-husband used to stay up really late at night to watch the syndicated version of the show, but he never watched the prime time version. And he'd be dragging by the end of the week because he wasn't getting enough sleep because he was staying up so late.

One day I asked him why he didn't watch the show when it came on during prime time and you know what he said? "It's not as good then."

After I stopped laughing at him (I was supportive like that and all), I pointed out that it was exactly the same show. That the only possible difference would be if they cut parts out of it to allow for more advertising to make more money. He looked at me kind of sheepishly and said he knew but he never watched the show during prime time television because he really thought it was better in the middle of the night (it's amazing what seems like a better idea when you're sleep deprived).

I never got that. Until recently.

A few months ago they started airing Two and a Half Men with Charlie Sheen (it's Charlie, right?) at 10:30 at night. Now normally I'm asleep by then but I guess there were a couple of nights that I couldn't sleep and I caught the show. (I'd never seen it before.) And now I'm hooked. For the last month or so, I've been staying up until 11:00 every night to watch the show. Then dragging my rear into the office the next day because it's been a late night. By Friday I do good to be productive at all after a week of this. But I can't help myself - the shows too funny.

It's also on during prime time (writer's strike and reruns notwithstanding) but I don't watch it then because, well, for some reason...I just don't think it would be as good then. ;-)
